1950’s Transformation: Part One

This project was so fun, working with the 3 generations of wonderful women who call this place home! More square footage was added in 2011 and the intention was always to relocate the galley style kitchen to the new space, and they were finally ready to make it happen!

PROJECT AT A GLANCE:

Location:  Burlington, MA

Type of Home:  Multi-Level Home Built In 1955, With A 2011 Addition

Square Footage:  2,500 Square Feet

BEFORE: The home’s original kitchen was essentially a “Kitchen-In-A-Hallway” and the only place for seating was right in front of the stairs! This clearly was not going to work for this family, who loved to cook and gather together. To get everything they wanted, which included an island with seating, we had to relocate the kitchen to a new area in the home.

THE KITCHEN LOCATION BEFORE:  When they built the addition they always intended to relocate the kitchen to this room (picture below), which was being used as a formal dining room.  This space in their floor plan was perfect because of the the high ceilings and large window which gave us a nice canvas to work with!

DURING CONSTRUCTION:  The homeowners really wanted a classic feel, so I decided to go with stained lower cabinets, white upper cabinets, and gorgeous light quartz countertops.

Once the cabinets were installed, I was feeling like the ceiling was a little too plain.  We had already modified the previous ceiling design, but I felt like it still needed something more! While still keeping the classic design in mind, I decided to add beams to give it a clean look with some dimension . The overall size of the room is long and I didn’t want it to feel like a bowling alley.

AFTER: The final result is a kitchen that now truly feels like the heart of the home! The large island has comfortable seating for 4, and a front row seat be a part of the family cooking! The light upper cabinets and newly painted trim help make this space feel open and airy!

AFTER: I placed the refrigerator and additional storage on the opposite wall, so it’s close by and functional, but doesn’t take up space in the main gathering area. Check out the view below from the sink wall and close up of their new coffee bar area!

I love how the new kitchen is open to the family room! And how awesome are those kitchen island pendants?

BEFORE DINING ROOM SPACE: With the kitchen being relocated, we were able to take the space that was the original living room and convert it to their new formal dining room.

AFTER DINING ROOM:  Paul was SO EXCITED to hang the new mirror over the newly remodeled fireplace! If you missed out on that action, check it out here!

The fireplace was converted to a gas insert and we installed a reclaimed wood mantel to make the space feel inviting and cozy! I wanted to keep the paint color in this space a neutral tone since it is one of the main spaces that connects the front of the house to the addition. Alpaca by Sherwin Williams was the perfect greige to compliment the rest of the whole house color palette!
