Before & After_ Farmhouse Style Ranch Expansion

Before & After: Farmhouse Style Ranch Expansion

This home started off with some great features that you don’t typically see in a 1950’s ranch, such as lots of windows letting in natural light and high ceilings throughout.  Unfortunately, the poorly laid out kitchen and the fact that there was only one bathroom to speak of was making it a tight squeeze for the family of 4 that lives here! We were put to the test to see if we could give this family a second chance to help them fall in love with their home again!

PROJECT AT A GLANCE:

Location:  Burlington, MA

Type of Home:  Single Family Ranch Built In 1957

Square footage BEFORE THE ADDITION:  966 Square Feet

Square footage AFTER THE ADDITION:  1,326 square feet

BEFORE: The kitchen layout was done poorly, which made this space closed off from the rest of the house, and the only place to fit the refrigerator was out in the back hallway!  There was minimal counter space and no room for a table or any other seating.

There was a doorway to the back hallway where the refrigerator was kept, a doorway to the dining room, and a doorway to the living room.  SO MANY DOORWAYS!

BEFORE: I loved the bank of windows on the back wall, so that was something that we definitely wanted incorporated into the new design.  We also wanted to get all of the appliances back in the kitchen, create an island with seating, and add more counter space… all without breaking the bank!

AFTER: The first thing we did was take down all of the walls around the kitchen to create an open floor plan.  We then relocated the entrance to the back hallway so that we could add cabinetry under those beautiful windows, and created space for the island with seating which was more functional for the family.

With keeping one wall dedicated to windows, we decided to forgo top cabinets and created a pantry for extra storage in the back hallway where the fridge used to be located.

The back wall provided a natural spot for the sink to overlook the yard, and relocating that hallway door gave us enough room for more cabinetry. Even lighting was a challenge in this kitchen!  With limited options, we decided to go with lantern sconces on the back wall above each window and task lighting under the reclaimed wood open shelves.

The textured white subway tile backsplash brings the classic look home! The microwave is tucked away in the island design, so it’s out of sight, but still in reach.

AFTER: Having the kitchen open to the living area makes it a great space to gather.

AFTER: This project also included addition for a much needed master suite, with a vaulted ceilings, a walk-in closet, and full bathroom.  The extra bedroom allowed them to re-purpose one of the old bedrooms as a home office and gave them that much needed extra bath!

Introducing the Sunlit Kitchen Project in the suburbs of Massachusetts. Our clients were dealing with a super clunky and outdated kitchen layout that just didn't flow right and was eating up way too much space. Plus, it was on the darker side and felt pretty old-school. Fixing up the layout sounded simple enough, but it definitely threw us some curveballs. However, we nailed it! We brought in this gorgeous floor-to-ceiling picture window for some killer backyard views, beside the big bay window where we moved the sink over to.
