The homeowners of our 1980’s Kitchen Gets A Modern Makeover project called us back because their family was expanding, and they needed to renovate their main bathroom to accommodate 3 growing boys! We previously completed a first floor renovation for them, which included the kitchen, dining room, family room, and half bathroom / laundry.
There were a few things we needed to accomplish with this bathroom remodel: more space, more storage, and get rid of the pink! I also wanted to make it feel like a fun space that the boys could grow into.
PROJECT AT A GLANCE:

Type of Home: Colonial, Built In 1988
Square Footage: 2,712 Square Feet
BEFORE: The bathroom’s original layout was a great size and worked fairly well for our clients, so we decided to keep the fixtures in the same locations, but the 80’s bubblegum pink had to go! We also eliminated the linen closet so that we could make space for a double vanity and more drawers.
AFTER: Even though all the fixtures remained in the same locations, this bathroom was completely transformed! The additional space we gained from eliminating the closet (don’t worry, they had another one in the hallway!) gave us enough room to install 6 drawers. Hopefully, this helps so there will be no fighting down the line! *fingers crossed*
The blue green vanity, textured charcoal counter, black mirrors, and globe pendant lighting stand out against the light greige walls. People are always afraid to mix metals in a space, but I say, Why not? I chose to mix the black metal with brushed nickel, which really helped bring balance to the overall design.
Since there is dark flooring, and not much natural sunlight, I decided to go with a light neutral paint color with hints of gray: First Star by Sherwin-Williams.
The wood accents bring warmth into the space and I just love how cute the elephant decor is! Did you know that elephants with their trunk up symbolize good luck?
Creating a herringbone pattern by using a variation of textured blue subway tiles stood out as the perfect choice for the back wall of the shower. The color variation is fun, but also classic enough to grow into. To give this bathroom a contemporary twist, I stacked white subway tiles horizontally on the side shower walls. And how adorable is the little wooden stool?!
With the shower design being the focal point, I chose a bold large scale black hexagon for the flooring to add another element of shapes for some fun!

If I were to remodel my bathroom, I would make sure to hire the best remodeling contractor that may make a few changes. Thank you for sharing here as well the importance of having a double vanity since this will add more function. I also agree with you that it would be smarter to invest in light gray walls.
