Primary Suite Escape: Bedroom & Bathroom Renovation Reveal

The last time we worked with our clients Kevin and Michelle was at the “Stuck in the Middle” project, a remodel of their entire main living area featured in our T.V. series at the time, Renovation Rekindle.

This time around, we were called back to tackle a different challenge: renovating their outdated and cramped primary bedroom and bathroom and turning it into their dream “suite escape.”

Built in the early 1980s, their home already had a dedicated walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom. However, the layout left much to be desired. The shower was tiny, they shared a single small sink, and the closet was so tight there was barely any walking space.

Kevin and Michelle wanted this renovation to give them a larger, spa-like shower, a double vanity to make their morning routines smoother, and a functional walk-in closet. Achieving all these goals meant we had to reimagine the entire layout of the bedroom, bathroom, and closet.

Primary Bedroom

To create the space they envisioned, we made some strategic changes to the layout. See the before and after images of their bedroom below:

With all these changes on Kevin and Michelle’s wish list, their old bedroom furniture layout no longer made sense.

This led to making a few changes in the bedroom design: new flooring, relocating the accent wall, and installing wall sconces on the new bed wall.

We shifted the closet so that it now extends into the bedroom, and the closet access is inside the bathroom.

This created a much more spacious and practical closet with plenty of room for hanging clothes, shelving, and drawers.

Shifting the closet over gave us the opportunity to relocate the shower behind it, in that leftover nook of space.

Primary Bathroom

Relocating the shower also freed up the space we needed for a double vanity.

Michelle wanted to incorporate a splash of bold color,  so we decided to go with Lafayette Green by Benjamin Moore for the accent wall, perfectly complimenting the shower tile. We balanced the accent wall with a custom built oak vanity, a neutral herringbone floor, and soft gold hardware. We installed pocket doors for both the bathroom entrance and closet door for ease of use.

With the shower tucked away behind the closet, we decided to install a digital thermostatic valve near the shower entrance so Kevin and Michelle would be able to easily control the water and temperature without stepping inside. The back wall of the shower features bold green herringbone tile with white grout, creating a striking focal point. The side walls are finished with vertically stacked textured white subway tiles for a clean and modern look. We also included a two-level niche for convenient storage, making the shower both stylish and practical.

The renovated primary suite is now a functional, stylish retreat with ample closet space, a beautiful bathroom, and a layout that feels open and inviting. We look forward to seeing what Kevin and Michelle have in mind for their next project!
