Small Bathroom Design: 7 Ideas to Maximize Space and Style

If you’re in need of small bathroom design ideas that will maximize your space… look no further. After talking with hundreds of clients over the years, the challenge seems to always stay the same: “how do I make my bathroom feel bigger if I have limited space?”

The good news is that with the right approach, even the smallest space can be completely transformed. It comes down to a couple of things:

  • A smart layout with design details that visually expand the space.
  • Clever storage that merges function and beauty.

Keep scrolling for our small bathroom design ideas for your space that’ll make it feel brighter, bigger, and beautiful.

Built-in Shower Niche

White shower with marble look subway tile, and an oversized horizontal shower niche measuring 30 inches by 18 inches, finished with hexagon accent tile.

A shower niche is functional, stylish, and a major space-saver. We always try to incorporate one in our bathroom projects if we can. The standard size for a typical shower tub combo is 30″ x 18″ (as seen above).

These will also keep you from needing those clunky caddies that look cheap and waste space in your shower.

Another option, a double niche which could be done horizontally or vertically.

Plus, you could add a pop of colored tile or create bold contrast inside the niche (as seen above).

We’ve also done these for freestanding tubs! This bathtub (shown above) sat directly below a bay window, so there weren’t many storage options.

There ending up being just enough height to add a much-needed niche.

Hidden Storage

When storage space is tight, you might have to get sneaky. One of our favorite small bathroom organization ideas is building recessed storage right into the wall.

Just think, between the studs there’s often empty pockets of space just waiting to be utilized!

Yo could also do:

  • In-wall recessed mirrors
  • Recessed Medicine cabinet above the toilet

Towel Hooks vs. racks

Your current bathroom probably has a towel bar, as that’s typically the standard. Instead, we started using hooks because we found that towels dry just the same, and you can fit way more!

Large tile = bigger feel

large tiles and niche

Here’s a little optical illusion: the fewer grout lines your eyes see, the bigger the space feels. That’s why large format tiles are a great fit for small bathroom designs.

Whether it’s the floor or the shower walls, using big tiles (think 24×48) makes everything feel more seamless and clean. It also brings a more modern, elevated look.

Design Tip: Go for a neutral tone like soft gray or creamy white with minimal veining to keep things bright and airy.

Vertical Storage: look up, not out

When you can’t go wider, go higher. Adding vertical storage is one of the easiest (and cost effective) ways to gain storage space in small bathroom designs.

Ideas we love:

  • Open shelving above the toilet
  • Narrow vertical linen cabinets
  • Wall-mounted baskets or towel racks

In a recent bathroom, we tucked a tall cabinet into an awkward corner, and suddenly had room for towels, toiletries, and extra TP.

Statement Mirrors for space, light, & Decor

Never underestimate the power of a mirror. They create the illusion of a bigger space, and they reflect light and brighten the room. Statement mirrors can also double as decor in a small bathroom.

Even better? Try a backlit or LED mirror for a luxe touch that doesn’t take up extra space

Choosing Wall Colors

Color plays a huge role in how big your bathroom feels. Soft whites, warm neutrals, or light-toned wood all help reflect light and open up the space. It’s one of the simplest tricks in the book—and it works every time.

Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean boring! Use textures, shapes, or accent pieces to bring interest in other ways.

At the end of the day, small bathroom designs don’t need to feel limiting. With smart layout choices, hidden storage, and the right materials, even the tiniest bathroom can feel open, functional, and totally you.

Whether you’re planning a gut renovation or a simple small room makeover… keep these ideas in mind. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
