A few months ago, we shared project proposal concepts for this completely custom space that would serve as a true multi function flex room from daytime to nighttime: a home office, a relaxing day room, and a guest room that sleeps 2.
Our clients, Donna and Joe, downsized from a larger home into smaller space, but they still needed it to function in a way that works with their everyday life.
The room is complete and we want to share all the details with you! But first, here’s a quick overview of our very preliminary sketches:
The Design plan:
Starting out, the room was a blank canvas and not very big (approximately 13.5 x 10 feet). Within this footprint, our clients needed space for a few different functions: a home office, a relaxing day room, plus a way to accommodate their two grandsons for sleepovers. It was a pretty tall order!
That’s how we came up with this multi-functional built-in that includes a twin sized trundle bed. The benefits:
- Built-in storage
- It sleeps two
- It takes up a lot less space

The Finished Design:
For paint colors, we chose Benjamin Moore Tapestry Beige 975 for the shiplap, and a similar shade just a smidge darker, Coastal Fog 976, for the built-ins.
*Note that the photos may not appear in their true colors.
The wall color is slightly lighter, in the color Swiss Coffee OC-45, one of our favorite warm whites.
Another detail: Our client Joe specifically requested a spot to display his prized catch. So, there he is hanging out above the door!
This whole corner of the bed is storage, including underneath the desk.
And on the other end, we added open shelving with gorgeous gold gallery railing.
Donna and Joe are thrilled with how it turned out, and I’m so glad that we were able to create a space that combines all of their needs into one small room!
