A special thanks to James Hardie for sponsoring this project!
It’s no secret that bold, dark exteriors are trending right now, so we were super excited to have the opportunity to design a dramatic exterior for our new build using Hardie Plank Siding. Hardie fiber cement siding is durable, has an outstanding warranty, and the baked-on ColorPlus® Technology has greater resistance to fading, chipping, and cracking, meaning less maintenance for us!
When we first started envisioning the exterior of this home we knew that we wanted to go with black windows. We ultimately decided on a 4 over 1 window grid pattern design because while I love the look of traditional grids, I also love having an unobstructed view, so this gave us the best of both worlds. Then, when James Hardie asked us if we would be open to all black exterior trim we immediately said YES! It was the perfect detail for the dark exterior look we were after.
Up next was choosing the type and color for the siding. I knew that I wanted an overall dark color scheme, but I also wanted it to contrast with the black trim, so I chose a deep gray for the main siding color: Hardie Plank Lap Siding Select Cedarmill in Iron Gray.
On the large peak over the garage and the smaller peak on the opposite end of the house we went with Hardie Panel Verical Siding Smooth in Gray Slate. Using 2 different colors and 2 different siding products gives depth and dimension to the overall look. Then, we painted the front door to match the board and batten siding.
Other details:
- Black gutters to match the windows and trim
- Metal roof over the front porch for texture
- Matte black porch ceiling
- Natural cedar square porch columns
- Matte black metal barn lights over wood garage doors
- Vintage granite cobblestone front walkway
We are in love with how the Hardie Plank Siding and Trim all came together to give us the perfect moody exterior and can’t wait to share more details of our home with you!
