How We Turned an Unfinished Basement into a Multi-Functional Living Space

We’re excited to unveil our third project at the home of our clients Mike and Elyse. The Skinny Kitchen Makeover, and Baby Jack’s Playroom were both completed within the last couple of years and gave an entirely new look to their first floor.

With their growing family, they needed to make the most of every square foot, so we took their dated, underutilized space and turned it into a bright, modern, and multi-functional living area.

Key elements of the design plan included:

  • Opening up the stairway and upgrading the windows to flood the space with natural light and create an open, airy feel.
  • Designing a cozy family room with recessed lighting, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind.
  • Building a stylish home office for Elyse, giving her a dedicated, productive workspace for working from home.
  • Carving out a functional workout room, so fitness is always just a few steps away.

The Family Room

Exercise Room

What was once a dark and cluttered basement is now a welcoming and cozy family room retreat featuring a comfy gray sofa, natural light, and a built in bookcase.

The walls were painted a crisp, neutral color to reflect light and make the basement space feel more open.

It’s hard to believe that this is the same space! The transformation of a once-unused section of the basement into a perfectly sized home gym is exactly what they needed.

The addition of a hallway with a glass-paneled door maintains an open feel while separating the space from the rest of the basement.

Home Office

With Elyse working from home, having a dedicated office space was something she really wanted.

The basement renovation included the creation of a bright and functional home office with full access to the utility room. We were also able to sneak in a cute little bookshelf in the corner!

Mike + Elyse’s basement makeover showcases how an underutilized and not-so-appealing space can become one of the most valuable parts of a home. Whether creating a cozy family lounge, a motivating workout area, or a stylish home office, the possibilities for basement renovations are endless.
